Excerpts from this book
Bridal Gowns
Remember that the dressmaker and seamstress have a personal
stake in this process and that he or she is a sensitive person, too. I have
seen too many stressed-out brides and mothers who make the dressmaker’s life
miserable. The dressmaker is an artist and an integral part of this blessed
event, especially if the gown has needed a lot of reworking. He or she may have
some excellent ideas. Be cognizant of this and be thankful this person cares so
much.
Why Clean Your Gown?
Whether you keep your gown to restyle or to hand down, or
you intend to sell it to a secondhand store, it will need to be cleaned. A gown
that sits uncleaned for weeks, months or even years, may not be of use to
anyone.
Your Designated Helper
Who is going to take your gown in for cleaning and, perhaps, preservation after the wedding?
After the wedding, the bride is usually on her honeymoon, the mother and mother-in-law are mentally and physically drained, and the father usually can’t even conceive of helping. The gown sometimes sits even after the bride’s return, when she is busy adjusting to her new life. And in some cases, the gown is simply forgotten in the whirlwind and may not be cleaned for a year or more.
Discuss this issue before the wedding and designate a helper to take your gown in for cleaning and preservation. Many mothers walk into the drycleaners with their daughter’s gown after the wedding, feeling unprepared and unsure about the answers to all of the drycleaner’s questions.
Tuxedos
Wearing a tuxedo and the associated accouterments can be
fun. Depending on the event and the state of mind it elicits, dressing up for
formal occasions provides an air of excitement. If you have a well-fitting,
comfortable tuxedo, then you will be more relaxed, more confident, and perhaps
more socially energized. For many, however, wearing a tux is not a pleasing
experience. Perhaps the general bad rap that formal dressing has received
arises from the discomfort many men feel when the tuxedo is ill-fitting or the
tuxedo shirt is too stiff.
